Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior official stated the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
