Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
